Born in 1874, Knox worked as a seamstress, but cycling was her passion. She challenged American segregation when she walked into the 1895 annual meet of the League of American Wheelmen and presented her membership card to race despite the ban on members of colour.
Tragically, Knox died of kidney disease, aged just 26. But in her short life she succeeded in sparking debate on race, gender and sexism, and bringing to the attention of a nation, the huge hurdles faced by African-Americans and women.
