Juli Furtado is famous for her impressive collection of World Cup wins, and her outstanding contribution to women’s mountain biking. For 6 years of her professional mountain bike career Juli dominated the cross-country and downhill race scene. By collecting numerous wins, Juli was awarded the Guinness World Record for most career 1st place finishes in mountain biking.
Juli was widely expected to win the ’92 women’s XC World title, but she crashed badly in the race, hurt her knee, and didn’t even make the top ten. She came back the next day and instead of riding a bike she’d been riding all season, she rode a GT RTS-1 which she’d ridden only once or twice before. She won the elite women’s downhill title, becoming the only person in history, male or female, to win elite-level titles in both cross-country and downhill at the UCI World Championships.
